Physicians & Healthcare

Physicians often start earning seriously later than their peers, then move quickly into high income with very little time to manage it. My advice is to treat your tax-advantaged retirement plans as a priority, not an afterthought. If you work for a hospital, university health system, or other nonprofit, you may have access to both a 403(b) and a 457(b) deferred compensation plan, which together can let you save far more on a pre-tax basis than most people can. Many high earners contribute enough to get the employer match and stop there, missing a meaningful chance to reduce their tax bill every year while building wealth. Before you enroll, make sure you understand the details, because a 457(b) has its own rules about when and how you can access the money after you leave your employer, and those choices should fit your career plans and broader tax strategy. Also resist the urge to invest too conservatively. Many people in demanding professions default to "safe" options, but being too cautious too early can cost you growth you'll need to keep up with inflation over a long retirement. Having worked with many clients in healthcare, we've seen how much difference it makes when these decisions are coordinated from the start.
