Summarized from the CFP® Board's Practice Standards. cfp.net
Successful financial planning begins with understanding a client's goals, values, and current financial situation. Process starts with gathering information on a person's income, assets, expenses, taxes, insurance and estate plans. The information is reviewed for accuracy. A preliminary financial plan is produced from which a follow up appointment is scheduled where the plan is reviewed for changes or adjustments. Once finalized the plan is implemented and followed up on regularly to adjust for a client's life changes, market conditions, or new objectives. Ongoing reviews are essential to the proper implementation and maintenance of a financial plan.
