Treat your business and your personal financial life as one interconnected system. For many business owners, the business is their largest asset, their primary source of income, and a major part of their retirement plan. Decisions about how much to reinvest, how to pay yourself, when to take distributions, which retirement plan to use, how to manage taxes, and eventually how to exit the business all have personal financial consequences. My advice is to regularly step outside the day-to-day demands of running the business and ask: “Is my business helping me build the life and financial future I actually want?” Your financial plan should help answer that question.

Make sure your financial plan is as intentional as your career. Executive compensation can create complexity through equity awards, deferred compensation, concentrated stock, benefits, and tax exposure. Understand how each piece fits into your broader financial life, and build a strategy for turning the wealth created by your career into lasting financial independence.

It is one thing to retire from something. What are you going to retire to? Before choosing a retirement date, spend time imagining what an ordinary Tuesday will look like when work no longer structures your day. Think about how you want to spend your time, who you want to spend it with, and what gives you purpose. Then build your financial plan around making that life possible.

Financial independence gives you something incredibly valuable: control over your time. Before walking away from a paycheck, make sure your plan is built for the unusually long journey ahead. Stress-test your spending, taxes, health insurance, and investment strategy across several decades. Then ask how much flexibility you have when life or markets do not unfold exactly as planned.

It is never too early or too late to start planning for retirement. Keep the plan clear and make the pieces work together. Retirement is a series of transitions: leaving work, navigating health insurance before 65, Medicare, Social Security, potential Roth conversions, Qualified Charitable Distributions, and eventually Required Minimum Distributions. Understanding what changes at each stage can help you make better decisions today and prepare for what comes next.

You do not have to make every decision right away. Sudden wealth can create a surprising amount of pressure to invest, spend, give, pay off debt, or make major life changes. Give yourself time to understand what you have, what tax consequences may come with it, and what you want this wealth to accomplish. A thoughtful plan can turn a windfall into something that meaningfully improves your life for years to come.
